Gisenyi Hydropower Plant Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation of a pre-existing run-of-river SHPP with weir and frontal intake, sand
trap, low pressure concrete buried pipe, surge tank, two parallel steel penstocks,
powerhouse with two Francis turbines, tailrace channel.
The necessary works to upgrade the SHPP from 1.3 MW to 1.7 MW include:
new lateral intake, upgrading of the sand trap, replacement of about 80 meters of low
pressure pipe, converging of the two existing penstocks, replacement of the two
existing turbines with a bigger one, replacement of the MV and LV panels, control
panels, automation.
SHPP final data after rehabilitation:
Concrete low pressure pipe: 735 m long
Penstocks: Two 945 m mild steel
Penstocks’ diameters: 680-630-580 mm
Gross head: 91.49 m
Turbine: 1 Francis groups
Design flow rate: 2.5 m3/s
Installed capacity: 1.7 MW
Energy output: 10.12 GWh
